9/7/2003 - Celebrant Mass to reflect history and observe “Grito de Dolores” tradition

A TIMELESS TRADITION
Celebrant Mass to reflect history and observe “Grito de Dolores” tradition

In the darkening skies of Lubbock, a single light will illuminate two flags: One Mexican, one American. The flags and a nearby banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico’s patron saint, will mark the eve of the day in 1810 that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in Dolores, Mexico, declared his country’s freedom from Spain. A ringing bell will mark the very moment when Mexico began its fight for independence and highlight this city’s multicultural heritage. The “Grito de Dolores” will be held a separate location from the festival this year at Our Lady of Grace Church.

Prior to the “Grito”, Fiestas del Llano will also hold its traditional mass on Monday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m. The outdoor mass will be held at Our Lady of Grace Church, located at 3111 Erskine. Father David Cruz will serve as Celebrant.

For over 50 years in Lubbock, “Fiestas Patrias” has observed and sustained the “Grito de Dolores”. This timeless tradition that will be led by the Most Reverend, Bishop Placido Rodriguez; Chirsty Martinez, Board Chairperson; members of the Fiestas del Llano, Inc. Board; and many other dignitaries. The “Grito de Dolores” will be held Monday, September 15 at 8:30 p.m. at 3111 Erskine Street.
