HEROES TO BE HONORED
Festival accepting parade applications
With a number of military heroes returning home from abroad, the Fiestas del Llano 2003 Festival Committee wants to encourage hometown heroes to participate in the upcoming “Fiestas Patrias” parade, to be held Saturday, Sept. 13.
The Honorable Judge Sam Medina, will serve as the 2003 parade Grand Marshal. Judge Medina, has been an advocate of the organization, and has been instrumental in helping the organization achieve its mission of encouraging the community to embrace the Hispanic culture, and observing and sustaining tradition.
Every year, during the traditional Fiestas del Llano parade, the floats display a montage of important Hispanic cultural icons and traditions, as well as the diversity that comprises the Lubbock community. Numerous businesses, schools, and organizations participate in the parade not only to celebrate the Hispanic heritage, but also to showcase their programs, products, and volunteers.
This year’s festival and parade theme is “Celebrating Heroes of the Past, Present and Future”. Participants are encouraged to decorate their floats with an array of color and a flare expressing the creativity of their organizations, schools, or programs.
The parade is an opportunity to make the Hispanic community aware of programs, voting, as well as to send a message that displays their embracement of the Hispanics culture.
Besides the parade, the four-day festival which will be held September 11-14, draws thousands of people daily, and features food, games, cultural activities, and live music stages. The traditional “Grito de Dolores” will be held on September 15th at an off sight location.
Interested participants can request a parade applications until September 5, and should return them by September 8,2003.
