Name of scholarship pageant to change for opportunity

After long discussions, the Board of Directors of Fiestas del Llano, Inc. decided to accept a recommendation to change the name of the “Miss Fiestas del Llano Scholarship Pageant” to the “Miss Hispanic Lubbock Scholarship Pageant”. The competition provides a local forum for today's young women to express their viewpoints, talents and accomplishments to a Lubbock audience the evening of the pageant and to the public at large during the ensuing year.



The Board of Directors discussed that the title change would increase the frequency and scope of Miss Fiestas del Llano’s issue-oriented appearances and ensure that her personal platform would be communicated throughout Lubbock and school systems she visits during the year.

“The name change will not replace our commitment to the community but rather, open doors of opportunity,” said Christy Martinez, Fiestas del Llano, Inc. Board Chairperson, “This program is produced by Fiestas and exists for the purpose of providing personal and professional opportunities for young Hispanic women and promoting their voice in culture, and issues affecting the community.”

The competition was begun by a group of civic-minded citizens concerned about higher education. Almost all contestants are in the process of earning college or High school diplomas and utilize Miss Fiestas del Llano scholarship awards for furthering their education. Since 1999, about $100,000 in scholarship awards have been provided to young women interested in attending Texas Tech University and other fine colleges.

The pageant, which is held in conjunction with the 16th of September holiday, a community wide event, allows Lubbock residents to learn about the Hispanic culture and participate in the celebration. The scholarship pageant will be held September 12, 2003, at the Civic Center Theater, beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased through Select a Seat at 770-2000.
