2/18/2004 - Fiestas del Llano coordinator takes job with National Council of La Raza

Christy Martinez of Lubbock has been chosen as assistant director of public information for the National Council of La Raza in Washington, D.C.

The NCLR is known as an advocacy organization for Hispanics.

Martinez served as a full-time volunteer for Fiestas del Llano in Lubbock and was involved in coordinating its annual festival. She also initiated the Si Se Puede Scholarship and Awards Banquet and spearheaded efforts to open a Hispanic Culture Center locally.

"Christy will undoubtedly be missed by the Lubbock community, especially the board of directors of Fiestas Del Llano Inc., who embraced her vision of continuing to unfold the success of Fiestas del Llano," said Frank Gutierrez, board member.

Martinez said, "Time and chance happen to everyone. I'm thrilled that my time has come and feel blessed to have the chance to work to help the Hispanic community fulfill its enormous potential. My dream to be an amplified voice for Latinos nationally will be a reality, working for the premier Hispanic organization in the nation — NCLR."

Martinez and her husband, Frank Garcia, and daughter, Amaris, plan to maintain homes for a time in Lubbock and Washington. She is scheduled to assume her duties in Washington on March 8.
