Smithsonian to Hold Ceremony to Commemorate Latino Achievement

“Our Journeys/ Our Stories: Portraits of Latino Achievement,” an exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives, takes a look at the life experiences of U.S. Latinos who have made significant contributions to American life. The exhibition, which includes 25 photo portraits and biographical narratives, depicts Nobel laureates, scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, politicians, community activists and people from all walks of life.

Visitors will discover what propelled astronaut Ellen Ochoa into outer space, how Rebecca Lobo spends her time off the basketball court and who inspired New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson to pursue a life of public service, among others.

Also featured in “Our Journeys/Our Stories” are dichos, or familiar sayings, that have helped inspire the individuals in the exhibition. Dichos include ¡Sí se puede! (We can do it!) and El que algo quiere, algo le cuesta (No pain, no gain).
