SENATOR BLANCHE LAMBERT LINCOLN, SENATOR RICHARD G. LUGAR, AND REPRESENTATIVE JOHN LEWIS TO BE HONORED AT 2004 NCLR CAPITAL AWARDS
Washington, D.C. - The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights organization, will hold its 2004 Capital Awards Dinner on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 in Washington, D.C. Senator Blanche L. Lincoln (D-AR), Senator Richard G. Lugar (R-IN), and Representative John Lewis (D-GA) will be honored for their contributions and commitment to the Latino community.
The gala event, which will take place at the National Building Museum, 401 F Street, N.W., beginning at 5:30 p.m., features a performance by Guadalupe Piñeda Con Azul Bohemia. In addition, acclaimed television, film, and stage actor Tony Plana will serve as Master of Ceremonies. AT&T is serving as this year’s Dinner Chair with Citigroup, Fannie Mae Foundation, Frito-Lay, Inc./PepsiCo, Inc., and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. serving as Vice Chairs for the event.
NCLR President Raul Yzaguirre lauded the accomplishments of the honorees. “Senator Blanche L. Lincoln’s work to ensure that tax and economic growth policies help all Americans, especially low- and moderate-income working families hit hardest by the recession, has helped keep millions of Hispanic families financially stable during these difficult times,” noted Yzaguirre.
Yzaguirre continued, “Senator Richard Lugar has long been an advocate of nutrition programs for low-income Americans, especially children. As a result of his commitment and leadership to restore legal immigrants’ eligibility to the Food Stamp program, thousands of immigrants will now be able to feel the security of knowing they will have food on the table for their families.”
“We are honored to recognize Representative John Lewis for his more than four decades of leadership and dedication to the cause of civil rights for all Americans. During the 2003 Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride, he played a central leadership role in communicating that immigrants are a key part of today’s civil rights movement,” concluded Yzaguirre.
