Washington, D.C.– In a grassroots effort to educate the Latino community about the realities of the guest worker immigration policy announced yesterday by President George W. Bush, a coalition of progressive, civil rights, and grassroots organizations are launching a Spanish-language TV ad campaign scheduled to hit the airwaves early next week.
“We believe that people should decide for themselves how they feel about the President’s proposal but we also feel that people should have all the facts before they make their judgment,” stated Cecilia Muñoz, Vice President of Policy for the National Council of La Raza (NCLR).
“The community needs to know that what they have been asking for, for more than two years – a chance to become a full partner in the American dream – is not what the President is proposing. Immigrants who work hard and a have a deep faith in this country deserve better and the Latino community deserves more from policymakers than a program that benefits employers at the expense of workers. And finally, a full and stable partnership is what will be of greatest benefit to our economy and our future,” Muñoz continued.
The coalition creating and funding the ad includes NCLR, the Center for Community Change (CCC), and People For the American Way (PFAW). The groups began working together immediately following the announcement of the new policy, and more groups are expected to join as word spreads in the coming days. The ad was produced by the Squier, Knapp, Dunn media firm and will be aired on Univision and Telemundo.
