11/18/2003 - Students lead in fundraising effort to provide scholarships

ADDING SPICE TO RETENTION

The Hispanic Student Society (HSS) a student led organization of Texas Tech University will be holding a scholarship fundraiser to assist in its goal of increasing and retaining Hispanic student enrollment; a focus of attention for the organization, since 1964.

The annual HSS “Salsa Night” will be held Friday, November 21, 2004 at Don Pablo’s Mexican Restaurant, located at 4625 50th Street, from 11p.m. to 2 a.m. A variety of Latin-based music will fill the night of fun for good reason.

Proceeds from the event will go towards the scholarship fund, which will be disseminated to Texas Tech students during an April banquet. The cover charge will be $5 for the general public, and $4 for students with Tech Ids.

The Hispanic Student Society founded in 1964 was one of the first Texas Tech minority student organizations on campus. On the heels of its 40-year anniversary, HSS has helped promote diversity and tolerance through academics and social support for minority students. In addition, members provide community service in Lubbock and the surrounding area.

For more information please contact Miguel Lopez, Public Relations Chairman at (806) 441-8731, or Bonnie Kirk, HSS President at (432) 352-9641.
