One of the most coveted events is the Grito de Dolores, which means, “Cry of Dolores”. On this evening visitors participate in a commemoration of when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla proclaimed independence from Spain in Dolores, Mexico in 1810. The Mexican national anthem and the American national anthem fill the skies and give participants a true sense of pride. The ringing of the bells, the waving of the Mexican flag, as well as a picture of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint who was indigenous to Mexico, and whose image was of a woman of color, signify Mexico’s fight for independence. This timeless tradition is observed the eve of September 16.
